Why Tree Removal Pricing Varies So Much
If you've asked around for tree removal quotes in Adelaide and received wildly different numbers, you're not alone. Unlike a lot of trades, tree removal has almost no fixed pricing — the job can range from a few hundred dollars for a small ornamental to several thousand for a large eucalyptus in a difficult position. Understanding why helps you evaluate quotes fairly and avoid being overcharged or under-served.
The Main Factors That Affect Cost
1. Tree Size
This is the biggest single factor. A small ornamental tree — an olive, a lemon, a young frangipani — can usually be removed in a couple of hours with minimal equipment. A large mature eucalyptus, Canary Island palm, or Aleppo pine is an entirely different job. Height and trunk diameter both matter: more wood means more time cutting, more material to chip and remove, and in some cases heavier rigging equipment.
2. Access
A tree in an open backyard with wide gate access and a clear drop zone is relatively straightforward. The same tree behind a narrow side passage, over a pool, against a fence, or on a sloped block adds significant time and complexity. If we can't get a chipper close to the tree, the entire timber volume has to be carried out by hand — that alone can double labour time on some jobs.
3. Proximity to Structures
Any tree within falling distance of a building, fence, pool, or neighbouring property requires sectional removal — taking the tree down piece by piece from the top, using ropes and rigging to control exactly where each section lands. This is slower and more skilled work than open felling, and is reflected in the cost. It's also non-negotiable in most suburban Adelaide blocks.
4. Species and Wood Density
Species matter more than most people expect. Dense hardwoods like ironbark and box take longer to cut and produce more volume than soft ornamentals. Eucalyptus species have unpredictable grain and can be prone to splitting during sectional work, requiring extra care. Palms are awkward due to their weight distribution and require different rigging. We assess species as part of the quoting process.
5. Stump Grinding
Unless you specifically request it, a removal quote typically covers getting the tree down and removing the debris — the stump is left at ground level. Stump grinding to 150–200mm below ground level is usually quoted separately and adds to the total cost depending on stump diameter and root system complexity. If you want to turf or replant the area, stump grinding is worth doing at the same time.
6. Number of Trees
Removing multiple trees on the same day often costs less per tree than separate visits, because setup, equipment mobilisation, and travel are shared across the job. If you have several trees to deal with, it's worth asking about a combined quote.
Rough Price Ranges in Adelaide (General Guide)
We don't publish fixed prices because the variation is too large to be meaningful — a "$500 tree removal" might be accurate for one tree and completely misleading for another. That said, as a rough guide:
- Small trees (under 5m, open access): typically towards the lower end of the market
- Medium trees (5–12m, standard suburban block): mid-range, varies significantly by species and position
- Large trees (12m+, near structures): substantial investment — sectional work, rigging, and time add up
- Palms: specialist pricing due to rigging requirements
The best way to get an accurate number is to request a free on-site quote. We assess the job in person and give you a written price before any work begins. See our dedicated tree removal page for more on our approach.
What Should Be Included in the Price?
When comparing quotes, make sure you understand what's included. A good quote should cover:
- All labour and equipment to remove the tree
- Chipping and removal of all timber, branches, and debris
- Clean-up of the work area — no material left on site
- Stump grinding (if quoted separately, confirm this upfront)
Be cautious of quotes that specify "timber left on site" or "debris to be removed by client" — these reduce the quoted price but create work for you afterwards.
Does My Council Affect the Price?
If your tree is protected under your council's significant tree provisions, a Development Approval may be required before removal can proceed. This doesn't change the removal cost itself, but it adds time and potentially an application fee. We can advise on permit requirements during the quoting process.
