We get this question regularly, and it's a reasonable one — the industry doesn't always use these terms consistently, and most homeowners understandably treat them as synonyms. They're not, and understanding the difference helps you describe what you need and evaluate whether the work proposed is actually appropriate for your tree.
The Short Version
- Trimming is about managing size and clearance — controlling where the tree grows in relation to its surroundings
- Pruning is about the tree's internal structure and health — removing specific branches for specific biological or safety reasons
In practice, many jobs involve both. But the objectives, techniques, and timing differ — and what your tree actually needs should drive which approach is taken.
Tree Trimming
Tree trimming is the process of cutting back branches to reduce the size or spread of a tree's canopy. It's primarily a reactive response to where the tree is growing — branches over the roof, into gutters, against a fence, toward power lines, or blocking light.
Good trimming:
- Removes branches at the right collar point (not as a stub)
- Maintains the tree's natural shape as much as possible
- Doesn't remove more than roughly a third of the live canopy at once
- Addresses the clearance or size problem without causing unnecessary stress
Bad trimming — often called "lopping" — involves heavy indiscriminate cutting that ignores collar points, creates large stubs that can't heal properly, and often triggers excessive weak regrowth that creates ongoing problems. Lopping might achieve short-term size reduction but damages the tree structurally and increases long-term risk and maintenance.
Tree Pruning
Tree pruning is more considered work — identifying and removing specific branches for specific reasons, guided by an understanding of how the tree grows, where it's likely to fail, and what it needs to remain healthy and stable. It's governed by Australian Standard AS4373: Pruning of Amenity Trees.
Types of pruning include:
- Crown thinning: removing select branches throughout the canopy to improve light and air movement without changing the overall shape
- Crown lifting: removing lower branches to raise the canopy clearance
- Crown reduction: reducing the overall size while maintaining the tree's natural form
- Deadwood removal: removing dead, dying, or broken branches that pose a fall risk
- Structural or formative pruning: improving the tree's architecture, removing weak branch unions, addressing co-dominant stems
Which Does Your Tree Need?
A few scenarios to help you decide:
- Branches growing into the roof or gutters → trimming
- Large dead branches visible in the canopy → pruning (deadwood removal)
- Tree has grown too big for its space → could be trimming or crown reduction (a form of pruning), depending on the extent and approach
- Tree looks unbalanced or has a weak fork → structural pruning
- You want to let more light into the garden → crown thinning (pruning)
- Branches over the fence or driveway → trimming
Timing
Trimming for clearance can be done at any time of year — it's reactive and there's rarely a benefit to waiting. Pruning for health and structure has more specific timing by species:
- Deciduous trees (liquid ambers, plane trees, ornamental pears): late winter while dormant is ideal
- Native species (eucalyptus, acacias): late summer through autumn tends to work better; avoid peak growing season
- Fruit trees: timing depends heavily on the variety; most stone fruit in winter, citrus more flexible
Deadwood removal is time-independent — there's no benefit to leaving hazardous material in a tree.
